Barbuda

Change pace for a minute and take the short flight by plane or ferry over to Antigua's sister island Barbuda. If you love nature and un-spoilt wilderness, you will love Barbuda. In fact one almost feels transported back to an earlier time where it would not be unusual to see a native Arawak (indigenous people) rowing a dugout canoe out to the reefs for an evening of fishing. Barbuda is an undiscovered gem. The island boasts a population of 1500 or so which on an island of 32 square miles allows you to truly appreciate the feeling of being alone.

Being this close to nature lends it a certain charm. A little of that pioneer spirit and a whole other world in which to test yourself as lazy beach bum or tribal warrior. Most areas (the good ones anyway) are accessible only with the help of a good four-wheeler or some vigorous hiking. The end results - well worth it.

Barbuda may be the only island in the Caribbean that can literally claim pink sand beaches. The pink appears to be from years of mixing of the shells in with the native coral sand but the end result is beaches that have a decidedly floral tinted pink…no optical illusions here. The Beaches are endless and for the most part deserted. It's just you, surf and sand and of course your sunscreen. If you like the idea of sunbathing “au natural”, Barbuda may be for you

If you are lucky and the moon is right (moonless nights are best) you can catch rare glimpses of endangered Sea Turtles as they come ashore to nest. Much oriented towards the conservation effort, the island also lays claim to a bird sanctuary for the Frigate Bird. More commonly known by the locals as a ”Man of War” this bird shows distinction among the species. The males have a large scarlet pouch that comes into full prominence at mating season where it is used in courting rituals to attract a potential mate. The island also hosts white tailed deer, boars and a host of other wildlife,

Hope we have teased you enough on Barbuda. We invite you to come visit and form your own lasting impressions.
